10 Things To Learn From Medieval Knights

Apr 11th, 2011 Peter Atwood

A rather odd method of straightening up kids being practiced at Lincolnshire is taking them to "Knight's School" for about eight weeks. According to analysts the method has proved to be a success. Question is, what kind of virtues could our kids or even us adults borrow from knights from medieval times to apply in today's situations.

Medieval knights are portrayed as some very kind and straightforward men who did everything for the good of others. Even so, they might have also been just some selfish sly people who were lucky to get a good write up in the history books.

In any case, we can learn a lot from the stories. This is a list of ten general great values of knights as
documented by medieval experts.

1 . Generosity is crucial. Knights were usually respected people and of a certain social status. However, when it came to rewarding their servants and followers, generosity was expected of them. In war for instance, after acquiring things from the other side, they would distribute the acquired loot to the followers as a thank you for their loyalty to him.

2 . A very important concept of chivalry is mercy. When two knights fight, and one concedes defeat then the winning knight is expected to be merciful and gracious. This is how ransoming came to be. Whether they are fighting or one has won and is holding the other one captive, a knight should respect and show honor to other knight.

What we can learn here is that if you beat another kid in a tussle, you should go easy on him.

3 . Being loyal to the King was very important. This meant going by the codes and respecting authority and the superiors. The lesson here is to have respect for the elders.

4 . Be responsible with power. The knights ensured that violence was allowed only when it was justified. The lesson here is not to throw your weight around only because you are the class leader or the biggest.

5 . Make the weak secure. Knights ensured that the weak ones were not exploited or taken advantage of by the others. The lesson here is to protect children from gangs and bullies.

6. Justice. You should not let you personal interest or bias stray you from doing what is right. You should remember that justice is a very powerful thing but the judiciary must be in the right hands in order to deliver with mercy and humanity. The lesson here is to fight for what is right.

7 . Humility. You should respect other peoples contributions. Avoid being proud of your achievements, let other people notice your accomplishments and praise you. You should praise other peoples accomplishments before yours and giving them the deserving credits. The lesson here is to give credit where it is due.

There are also things not to be learnt:

8 . Crusading, which is fighting for Christianity and against Muslims. The lesson is to respect
people's beliefs.

9. Wielding a very sharp implement.

Why not? Because they kill. The lesson is to not carry knives.

10. Courtly love, between champions and ladies, which is rather inapplicable to the modern world. The lesson here is don't think the girls will be impressed.
